Thank God for Summer Television

I spent shockingly little time watching television this past year.

Since we all know that's a blatant lie let me rephrase--my commitment and enthusiasm for watching shows live declined dramatically. The only shows that I watched as they aired were 'Castle' and 'How I Met Your Mother'. Don't ask me why those specific shows won out, because I honestly don't have an answer.

Now, however, it's finally summer and while (since adulthood) that doesn't mean my workload is any less than it is during the rest of the year, the annoying heat and rampant mosquitoes will encourage me to watch more TV as it airs. Lucky you!

What shows am I planning on watching and/or already watching?

'Rizzoli and Isles', Lesbian Subtext, and TNT Ratings

'Rizzoli and Isles' (airing Monday nights 10/9C on TNT) is full of lesbian subtext. There's no way around it, you watch an episode and it's just there. I watched a single episode with my mother, with no conversations about what the show entailed ahead of time, and by the time we were halfway through she had already asked me if Jane and Maura were together.

And the answer is no, no they're not. And they probably never will be. The characters are both straight women--Janet Tamaro (the creater) has said this, Sasha Alexander and Angie Harmon have said this, and Tess Gerritsen (who wrote the books upon which the characters are based) has said this. But, despite the fact that the characters are (apparently, definitively, 100%)  straight, the show is full of lesbian subtext. And some of it is so obvious it's maintext (if you don't believe me watch the most recent episode, "Seventeen Ain't So Sweet"-S2Ep14).

There is no way that all of that is accidental; everyone involved with the show knows about its large lesbian following. Janet Tamaro has commented on it in interviews, and Sasha Alexander acknowledged the Lesbian 'Rizzoli and Isles' Drinking Game on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (see the clip below).  I imagine that in the writers room they have fun throwing in situations where Maura and Jane could be construed as being a couple, and I imagine Sasha Alexander and Angie Harmon occasionally throw a few meaningful glances in amongst their acting for the same reason.

After all, lets be honest, if they show wasn't acquiring a lesbian following it wouldn't be doing half as well. It's just not that good. The writing isn't any more brilliant than half a dozen other crime shows on the air right now (and no where near as good as 'Castle' or 'Bones'), but it has something those shows don't have. Two incredibly attractive female leads. My guess is that at the very least the executives at TNT try to continue to appeal to their lesbian following--the infamous speed dating promo suggests that's the case.

And if TNT wasn't aware of the true importance of their lesbian viewers before this week's episode, maybe they will be now.  Neither #RizzoliandIsles nor #RandI trended during the most recent episode, but you know what did trend? #gayzzoli. Hopefully TNT, and 'Rizzoli and Isles', will take a hint and keep up the subtext.

Sasha Alexander talks about how gay her show is, plus the drinking game:

'Rizzoli & Isles', 'Bones', & High School Reunions

Tonight on 'Rizzoli & Isles' there's a dead classmate at Rizzoli's high school reunion.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Think 'Bones'--"The Death of the Queen bee" (S5Ep17).

How much do you want to bet that Isles will end up attending Rizzoli's reunion with her, reminiscent of how Booth attended Brennan's?

'Rizzoli & Isles' Returns!

As a Thanksgiving gift for you all, 'Rizzoli & Isles' is returning this coming Monday (11/28).

How excited are you? This excited?

'Covert Affairs' is back!

Apparently summer television isn't just for summer anymore.

Both USA and TNT have decided to release new episodes of their hit summer shows starting this month.

'Covert Affairs' returned to our TVs on Tuesday (11/7), and I'm pleased to say that Annie Walker is as interesting as ever. In case you missed it you can catch up on Hulu. All new episodes will continue to air this month: Tuesdays at 10/9c on USA.

'Rizzoli and Isles' is also returning starting on November 28th at 10/9c. That's a Monday, which is unfortunate because it will conflict with 'Castle'. Time to prepare your DVRs!

'Coming & Going', Sasha Alexander & Rhys Darby Movie Reviewed.

'Coming & Going' Reviewed
(for a description of the movie and its trailer go HERE)

Okay, first of all 'Coming & Going' wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. There were some funny moments, though mainly they were little verbal gags thrown in here and there. One of the best conversations is when Sue is talking about whether her baby has 'white cells' or 'black cells' (after she has cheated on her husband with a black guy) and Lee (her OB-GYN) asks whether she has something she needs to tell him. I also love how Lee responds with "honesty is the best policy" yet he is lying about being in a wheelchair!
Major flaws...
1. Logic
For example, in the scene where Lee (Darby) is first heading to meet Alex (Alexander) at a bar:
"You're not on the list."-the bouncer
"I am on the list, I'm meeting Alex."-Lee
"Alex said she was meeting a guy in a wheelchair."-bouncer

much arguing later Lee goes back to his car to get his wheelchair.
As my friend pointed out to me as we were watching...if his name was on the list why didn't he just show ID?!

2. Annoying Characters
Case in point, Happy the Whale, aka Sue's husband.

3. Awkward

I am really uncomfortable with the scene where Alex and Lee are eating dinner together and he lies about how he got in a wheelchair.

Also, I wish Darby and Alexander had better chemistry.

And the camera work could have been a little better, some of the shots were...well...awkward.

4. Just Plain Weird
It's a little bizarre that this movie seems to totally sexualize asses. There were a lot of close-ups on Sasha Alexander's butt and then later on men that his aunt finds attractive. Also, I felt a little uncomfortable with this since I knew Ponti was calling the shots, and Alexander is his real-life wife.

5. Mimicking Other Shows
When Darby and Alexander first lie in bed together the angle of the shot exactly mimics that of the shot used recently in 'Rizzoli & Isles' when Alexander and Harmon are lying in bed together. Alexander is also on the same side of the bed and holds her body in the exact same position.

Carla Gallo plays Daisy on 'Bones', which as we all know is a show that is very similar to 'Rizzoli & Isles' (Alexander's show). She makes a guest appearance in 'Coming & Going', she is the first woman we see, and is supposed to be meeting Darby for a first date, but he stands her up.

Major Benefits...
1. Sasha Alexander can act.
2. Rhys Darby can act.
3. While the movie wasn't exactly original, it was just this side of plausible.

"Most men take flowers to a first date, you take a wheelchair!"--Lee's Aunt

Sasha Alexander is "Coming & Going" in her new TNT movie

read my review of this movie, or read on for a description and trailer.

TNT is reallllly loving Sasha Alexander.

Though I have to say, what's not to love? She was hot and smart on 'NCIS' and she's sexy and intelligent
(note: a step up from her 'NCIS' days!) on 'Rizzoli & Isles'.

I guess when you're the star of the highest rated premiere for a commercial supported cable t.v. show your networks gotta love you.

So why not exploit that? Why not, TNT?

They couldn't think of a reason. Hence "Coming & Going", (woah TNT you love your ampersands) the new Sasha Alexander movie that is premiering on TNT this Friday (July 15th) at 10 pm.

It's a movie about an OB-GYN (Rhys Darby from "Flight of the Conchords") who is awkward around women, and has always had a crush on Alexander's character. But then he ends up in a wheelchair (don't worry! It's temporary! please note sarcasm).

And she finally pays attention to him. This is not sounding like a brilliant plot, and may be a tad too Dawsonesque (remember Alexander's days on the Creek?) but come on, it's Sasha Alexander. Plus it's directed by Alexander's real life husband (Edoardo Ponti--whose real claim to fame is that he's the son of Sophia Loren), actually this may or may not be a good thing. I'm not entirely sure since his only real credit is as the director of "Between Strangers" where he directed...Sophia Loren. I think he may have managed to get that job through nepotism. Just maybe. But it did get decent reviews, so who knows.

Regardless I am hoping to catch watched "Coming & Going" on Friday at 10 pm on TNT (or Saturday at midnight) because I do love my trashy romantic movies. Read my review HERE.

Franklin & Bash: New TNT Lawyer Show

'Franklin & Bash':
The New 'Ally McBeal'?
For men?
With Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar!

Apparently TNT likes the concept of using the last names of main characters in their show titles. 'Rizzoli & Isles', a pretty great solid show that I enjoy watching, premiered on TNT last summer to strong ratings (and don't worry, it's back again soon for a 2nd season). This summer TNT is premiering the similarly named 'Franklin & Bash'. And no, the shows have nothing to do with each other. Although I suppose if TNT really wanted to they could orchestrate a cross-over episode. Now that I think about it, that would be pretty sweet.

But concentrating on the actual purpose of this post...'Franklin & Bash' is premiering tonight at 9 pm on TNT. It's being called "a David E. Kelley legal drama aimed at...men...rather than....women" by the NY Times. Except, you know, for the fact that it's not by David Kelley (aka the man behind 'Ally McBeal' and 'The Practice') nor do I really think that 'Ally McBeal' was for women. 'Ally McBeal' was sexualized (the show, not and Calista Flockhart) in such a way that the show was supposed to appeal to men too. Plus, just because a show has a female main character does not mean it's aimed towards women. I think what they meant to say was that the show's larger demographic was female.

But I'm getting slightly whiny/digressing.

'Franklin & Bash' has nothing to do with 'Ally McBeal' except for the fact that it is set in a law firm. And yes, the two main characters are men. They've recently graduated from law school and apparently have a frat-like quality which makes their introduction into a stuffy firm a bit of an imposition on the other lawyers. I'm assuming they'll also prove to be brilliant, because otherwise this show has nowhere to go. They'd get fired.

Are you planning on watching 'Franklin & Bash' tonight? Do you think (or did you think) it was worth watching? Also, do you think TNT believes in some kind of "main characters' last names in title" magic? seriously, why else would they think it makes sense to have two shows with almost identical looking titles (see below)...

Women in Science (Body of Proof)

"Bones" vs. "Rizzoli and Isles" vs. "Body of Proof"

There are now quite a few women who feature prominently on crime/medical television shows. They are often presented as science brainiac types. Unfortunately, they often have flaws which are far less likely to be present in their male counterparts.

Some of these women are:
*Temperance Brennan (also called Bones) on the television show "Bones"
*Maura Isles on "Rizzoli and Isles"
*and now Megan Hunt on "Body of Proof"

All of these women are presented as being remarkably intelligent. Brennan is a brilliant forensic anthropologist who is better at analyzing bones than (it seems) anyone else in the world of criminal forensics. She is also extraordinarily socially inept, to the point of aspergers. She is also clueless about popular culture, which often makes her seem unintelligent. That is not to say that people who have aspergers or are unaware of popular culture are unintelligent, more often than not it's the exact opposite. But when it's presented on television things often seem black and white, and unfortunately all that shines through the screen is her relative stupidity.

On "Rizzoli and Isles" Dr. Isles plays the medical examiner. She is skilled at her job, and is presented as a kind-hearted woman (she attempts to comfort Detective Rizzoli by showing up at her apartment and offering to spend the night in a non-sexual way. I promise. Well, kind of. Actually, I think it's totally sexual, and so would a lot of viewers, but I don't think that's what the writers were going for. Here's my post on the topic). But Dr. Isles, like Dr. Brennan, lacks social skills, and is unable to read people. For instance, in one episode, involving very wealthy friends of hers she sides with the friends, instead of supporting Rizzoli, and doesn't understand why Rizzoli is hurt. She also doesn't understand why her own wealth is an issue. Seriously? This is a woman who is supposed to be one of the smartest women on television? And she doesn't understand conflicts about social economic status?

Megan Hunt is the newest woman to join the genre. Her show, "Body of Proof", premiered last week on ABC. The show is yet another crime procedural/medical/forensics show. Dr. Hunt is a spectacularly gifted neuroscientist who has had to give up her operating career due to a car-crash related injury. She is now working as a medical examiner (sound like anyone we know?), she is also socially awkward (wait...this sounds kind of familiar), and stated in the series premiere that she "doesn't have any friends". She often finds the key to the whole mystery, but she is unlikable every step of the way.

All of the flaws that these women have frustrate me. I realize that it wouldn't really be watchable television if they were flawless, but the type of flaws that they do have seem to put a damper on their remarkable intelligence. On "House" Dr. House is also an incredibly intelligent yet flawed character, however, his flaws serve to emphasize his intelligence (sure, he doesn't care about morals, but his ways of proving he doesn't care are brilliant schemes...for instance, last week he hid ragweed in Wilson's vents to make him think he was allergic to a cat that House disliked).

Unfortunately, "Body of Proof" is a "Bones"/"Rizzoli & Isles" copycat that lacks any spark. I'm watching "Bones" because it's witty, a little off-kilter, and because the leads have great chemistry. I'm watching "Rizzoli & Isles" because the crimes are interesting, Sasha Alexander is hot, and I'm secretly hoping the title characters will get together. I'm watching "Body of Proof" again tonight...because I want to give it another chance. But honestly, a poorly portrayed genius-yet-flawed female character? I've seen that too many times before. And at least before the show she was in had other things to offer.

"Body of Proof" normally airs on ABC on Tuesdays at 10 pm, but you can also often catch it on Sunday nights at the same time. In fact, it's on in about 3 hours! So, check it out, see if you agree with me, leave a comment etc.

p.s. I'm not going to go on a rant about this, but do you notice that all of the extra-smart women are brunettes? And look how similar their looks/hair length/poses are in those photos.

"Bones" and "Rizzoli & Isles" are the Same Show

"Rizzoli & Isles" and "Bones"
(Again with the spoilers)

...I got a little confused earlier this week when I finished reading several of Tess Gerritsen's novels. Gerritsen is the author of the Rizzoli and Isles thrillers, and last summer TNT premiered a show of the same name that was loosely based on her books. I watched the show when it was on the air, and when I stumbled across Gerritsen's books in the library I decided to try them. There was only one problem...as I read I continually tried to compare the books to the television version of "Rizzoli and Isles", and I kept on getting images from "Bones" stuck in my head.

Obviously, I'd expect "Rizzoli and Isles" to be very different from the thrillers that it's based on. When I first started watching "Bones", based on the novels by Kathy Reichs, I had already read all of her books. There were very few similiarities, but I wasn't bothered. Books are books, and television is television.

But what bothers me about "Rizzoli and Isles" and "Bones" is that the two shows are shockingly similar.

Lets list the ways:

*Rizzoli is a hot-headed detective. She's knowledgeable about guns/bad guys. So is Booth.

*Isles is an attractive woman who is awkward in social situations. She works with dead bodies. Brennan does both of these things.

*They all go by their last names most of the time.

*Their relationships with each other are the heart of the show. Audiences want Booth and Brennan to end up together. And many viewers see an attraction between Rizzoli and Isles as well. In fact in the episode "I Kissed a Girl" the producers played with this idea, pleasing many fans by having Rizzoli and Isles mimic a lesbian relationship. In fact, if you search "Rizzoli and Isles" on Youtube all you'll find is videos that are edited to show a lesbian "relationship".

*Oh, and let's not get distracted by the fact that the cases are a bit too similar. Charles Hoyt is the serial killer in "Rizzoli and Isles", and he keeps going after single women. Howard Epps is the serial killer in "Bones" and he, you guessed it, also goes after single women (in his case teenage girls). Both of these men are sexually perverse. And both have bizarre relationships with the women trying to hunt them. Hoyt attacks Rizzoli and becomes obsessed with her, while Epps becomes immersed in the idea of beating Bones at a mind game.

Many of my friends who love "Bones" also thought that "Rizzoli and Isles" was a great show. I can understand why they watch both. It's like getting two doses of the same (pretty good) thing in the same week.
