'Bones' vs. 'Castle': What is Better?

Before this year I was a major 'Bones' fan. I completely adored the show. Even with my intense hatred of Hannah I kept watching. I trusted the writers, and I trusted Hart Hanson, and I figured that they must have some kind of end goal in sight. Now I'm losing confidence in them. 

Personally I think the quality of the episodes have been weak so far. Why?

• slightly boring cases
  
• no major villain introduced
• limited quality Bones/Booth interaction (all they seem to do is argue!)
• loss in dynamic between main characters (not because they're together in a relationship, but because they're not together enough on screen--hopefully this will improve when she's back in the field)
• forcing us to invest in Cam last season, while giving her no interaction with her new Doctor boyfriend or Michelle at all this season
• weird scenes with Hodgins/Angela and their baby without enough input from other cast members, making it seem like they're in their own mini-show

Before this year I hadn't seen a single episode of 'Castle'. I barely knew it existed. But this year a friend of mine told me to watch it, and I was hooked. I loved it as much as I loved 'Bones'. Plus, while 'Bones' is very weak this season, 'Castle' is only growing stronger.

How is 'Castle' particularly strong?

•  interesting underlying storylines (what will happen when Beckett realizes that Castle is trying to stop her from investigating her mother's case? And that he hid a potential lead--the phone call from the man threatening them--from her?)
• cases with twists (the creepy old woman locked in the cage is actually a villain!)
• good interactions between Castle and Beckett, with alone time on screen that includes banter and normal conversation
• quality storylines for the supporting characters that don't separate too much from the main plot (Esposito and Lanie, Ryan and his impending marriage, Alexis and college)

'Bones' Schedule Gets Reorganized

The networks giveth and the networks taketh away.

I'm talking (of course!) about the fact that while ABC is giving us an extra episode of 'Castle', FOX is reorganizing it's already shortened season of 'Bones'.

We were originally supposed to see the sixth episode of 'Bones' 7th season this Thursday (December 12th). Unfortunately, it occurred to the network that 'The Finder' (Hart Hanson's new show) would probably do better if it had a 'Bones' lead in so no new episode this Thursday. While this may be true, it doesn't make me happy.

'Bones' won't return until January 12th, and after that episode the show will be on hiatus until the spring.

There's not a new episode of 'Bones' on Dec 12th, it's a rerun!

'Castle' vs. 'Bones'

I'm newly, completely and utterly obsessed with 'Castle'. I honestly don't know how I could have been missing such a wonderful show.

In the last two weeks I've managed to watch up to the current episode (for those of you who'd like to judge me, that's about 60 episodes). I'm basically smitten with the show. I love the main characters and I love the supporting characters. And the writing, and the directing, and the camerawork. Hell, I even love the grip.

Now that Booth and Bones have done a relationship cop out with the whole pregnancy thing I'm even more attracted to 'Castle'. Not only do Richard Castle and Kate Beckett have great chemistry but I also think that the writers have done a better job of creating a realistic relationship. Of course, in many ways 'Bones' and 'Castle' follow a similar formula--they both have a law enforcement officer ('Bones' has Booth, who is an FBI agent, and 'Castle' has Beckett who is a NYC Police Officer), they both have a character who is slightly more serious ('Bones' has Brennan while 'Castle' has Beckett), and a character who is quirky ('Bones' has Booth, 'Castle' has Castle). And lets not forget the fact that both the shows are named after one of their main characters. Oh, and they both are procedural crime shows with some comedy thrown in.

Despite that, the character development in 'Castle' is stronger. The slow and steady way that we have been introduced to more and more facets of Beckett's personality has helped us to grow to understand her in the same gradual way that Castle has grown to understand her. In 'Bones' we know that Brennan has had a difficult past, but it was introduced unevenly and unrealistically (a particular scene that comes to mind is the one where Brennan mentions that she was once locked in the trunk of a car for two days by her foster family, suddenly suggesting that her problems stem not only from abandonment by her birth family, but also childhood abuse. Abuse that was never mentioned again.).

My only hope is that Castle and Beckett get together soon, because if they continue this back and forth too much longer it will build up far too much hype. I honestly don't want them to have to deal with the same problem that 'Bones' dealt with--six seasons of sexual tension was easily three seasons too many.

It seems clear that with the secrets Castle is now hiding from Beckett if they do get together their relationship might implode. Maybe the show will create a Ross and Rachel relationship, replicating the drama of 'we were on a break' while making it appropriate for their more serious show. Honestly, while I want to see Castle and Beckett together and happy, I would also prefer for them to get together, break-up, and get back together then for them to extend the lack of relationship too much longer.

1. "The Man in the Fallout Shelter" (S1Ep9)
I love this episode. Why wouldn't you want to watch everyone in the Jeffersonian trapped together during Christmas?

2. "Aliens in a Spacehip" (S2Ep9)
Brennan and Hodgins are buried alive, and we get to see how much Booth (and everyone else!) loves them.

3. "The Santa in the Slush" (S3Ep9)

What I Want to Happen on...'Bones'

What Will Happen During the Seventh Season of 'Bones'?

From time to time I like to post what I want to happen on some of my favorite series during their upcoming seasons. As the season starts and ends, I follow up on my predictions and see if any of them came true. Many of them don't. Mainly because I'm not guessing the most probable situations, but rather because I am coming up with what I really truly want to happen. Leave a comment below and I'll add your predictions to my list. I'll re-post come October after the Season 7 premiere date and we'll see if any of our predictions came true!

1. There have been rumors on the blogosphere that Booth is not the father of Brennan's baby. I refuse to accept this. Booth is the father of Brennan's baby.

2. Brennan will tentatively agree that Booth should live with her to look after the baby. She'll insist on separate bedrooms at first.

3. Or Season 7 will start and Brennan and Booth will be a romantic couple. Everyone knows (which is kind of boring) or no one knows except for Angela, and no one knows who the father of her baby is (I vote for this! Way for fun!).

3. This time around, Brennan will be the one attempting to persuade Booth that they need to give their relationship a try. He'll be a little hesitant because he was hurt by her (and Hannah) before, but he'll agree to give it a go because they have a child together.

4. Hannah will reappear for one episode to try and get Booth back. It will be awkward.

5. Booth will want to christen the baby, Brennan will be hesitant. It will be awkward...but in a much more entertaining way than the whole Hannah thing.

6. Sweets and Daisy will get married.

7. Angela and Hodgins will randomly bring their baby to work. But only once or twice, because children and sets don't mix well.

8. Cam will continue to be relegated to the background. Which is kind of okay with me. I like her, but I don't care about her character developing further.

9. Maybe Michelle will make an appearance. Remember her?

10. Sweets will have hilarious things to say about Booth and Brennan and their baby. Or maybe he'll be the one person they're hesitant to tell about Booth being the father, and he'll get confused as to how their relationship dynamic is changing.

When is "Bones" Back?

Thursday, November 3rd!

I admit that I'm probably as frustrated as the rest of you. Normally the new season starts in mid-September, and having to wait an extra month and a half doesn't mesh well with my patience. Still, the only good thing is in all likelihood it means that once the new season premieres we will have new episodes until May. Presumably Emily Deschanel is taking her maternity leave from the show right after her baby is born (this fall) until they show episodes in November. Because of this they may film as many episodes during hiatus (in July) as possible prior to her fall delivery. Which will make an interesting twist...how far along will she be in her pregnancy on the show? This definitely should calm the rumors online that Brennan's pregnancy annoucement is going to prove to be a dream, or that she will miscarry (although a late-term miscarriage is possible, it's a little too 'Secret Life of the American Teenager' to happen). Frankly, if I was the writers I wouldn't want to pass up the opportunity to show a frantic soon-to-be dad Booth dealing with a pregnant Brennan. But maybe they're tired of having to deal with pre-baby drama after Angela and Hodgins. Guess we'll just have to wait until November to see. All I can say is that I really hope they show everyone's reactions to Brennan's pregnancy, and their reactions to finding out that Booth is the father...if the writers skip that I'll be as annoyed as I was when they skipped the sex scenes at the end of last season.

edit: 'Bones' executive producer Stephen Nathan says, "The first episode will pick up with Brennan moving into the third trimester of her pregnancy. Brennan is still the same strong character and shows no sign of slowing down. She attacks each case as she always has, although she must now deal with the realities of being pregnant."

'Bones' will be having a delayed release due to E-D's baby, and a short season because of her maternity leave.

Fox hasn't released 'Bones' seventh season premiere date yet...but we do know that it will in all likelihood be in mid-September (that's when the last two seasons started). Of course, it's possible it will be pushed earlier than usual to get as much out of Emily Deschanel as possible before she goes on Maternity Leave. As soon as she's gone, so is the show...they'll be going on hiatus. This is good news for Deschanel's baby, and bad news for us because it means that we're going to get a shortened seventh season of 'Bones'. Hart Hanson's new show, 'The Finder' (which had a cross-over episode with 'Bones' during this past season) is going to takeover for 'Bones' for at least ten episodes.

The Hints in "The Hole in the Heart"

In "The Hole in the Heart" (last week's second to last 'Bones' episode) lots of things happened. A bunch of it was just the usual: there was a murder, they solved it. But, what all the fans really cared about was the suggestion that Brennan and Booth had finally had sex.

We know for a fact that Booth and Brennan spent a night sleeping in the same bed. The super crazy fans spent lots of time analyzing each scene to determine if this sleepover involved cuddling or actual sex.

Many bloggers pointed out that in "The End in the Beginning" (a dream episode where Booth and Brennan were married) their sex scene happened at 4:47. And in "The Hole in the Heart" when Brennan gets into bed with Booth it is exactly 4:47. And that doesn't seem accidental. Plus, I personally thought it was pretty obvious that they'd had sex because of the looks that Angela and Brennan exchanged, as well as the look that Brennan and Booth shared at the end of the episode.


I could spend more time analyzing the episode, but lots of bloggers have already done that. And it's kind of a moot point now...

Because we know that Booth and Brennan had sex at least once since....

Brennan is pregnant. And Booth is the father.

How's that for a season finale?

But Was It Expected?

I was expecting something exciting to occur during the season finale, and at 9:57 when I looked at my clock and nothing at all had really happened it just raised my expectations. And I wasn't disappointed. Of course, Emily Deschanel's real life pregnancy was a hint that Brennan would get pregnant too, but we didn't know for sure.

Throughout the episode Brennan constantly made comments about a very rude child. She kept looking at Booth and saying "our child" wouldn't be like that. Of course, she referred to Booth as Buck since they were undercover as a married couple at the time. And it wasn't completely clear where her comments were headed. It was obvious that it wasn't, as her father thought, just an attempt to stay in character. But I thought that it might be leaning towards a renewal of the whole 'Booth donating sperm' storyline that was dropped a while ago. Maybe Brennan just wanted a child?

Although I somehow doubted that because she seemed more concerned than eager. She also seemed incredibly worried about Angela's delivery.

And she was distant from Booth, as both Sweets and her father point out in different scenes. I assumed that the distance between them in the diner was because they'd had sex. And perhaps it was, because it was clearly a mutual distance. But in the bowling ally when her father points out that something is weird Booth seems a little clueless...suggesting that Brennan is the true cause of this distance because she is concerned about Booth's reaction to her pregnancy.

She doesn't really have much to be worried about. When she told Booth that she was pregnant and he was the father he got a huge grin on his face. He was obviously okay with it.

What I'm wondering is how in the world she got pregnant that fast. The amount of time that passes between 'Bones' episodes normally mimics a real-life time frame (so about a week). And considering the fact that Angela was really nearing labor in last week's episode, and delivered a baby in this week's episode, suggests that very little time passed. But there is no way that Brennan would know after a week (or even two) that she was pregnant. So, what's going on there?? Seriously, any suggestions?

And how in the world are we all going to wait until next season? I want to see everyone's shocked reactions to a Booth/Brennan pregnancy. And I really want to see them actually have sex (you know, to the extent that Fox can show us that). Because I feel a little cheated by the whole 'did they, didn't they' situation which really was no solution to the 'will they, won't they' stand-off of the last five years.

Bones Episode Review: The Finder aka The Bones spin-off episode

THURSDAY NIGHTS ARE THE BEST NIGHTS ON TELEVISION
and "Bones" really contributes to that excellence...normally...

Yay for all of you! Except you CBS, Sorry...

Thursday nights are the best nights on television, hands down. Seriously, can you beat a night full of "Bones", "Grey's", "The Office", "Parks and Rec", and "30 Rock"? Didn't think so. My only complaint is that several of these shows are on at the same time which makes later Hulu-ing/TiVo-ing necessary.

I've given you a full day to catch-up, so I really hope by now you've watched yesterday's "Bones". But, in case you missed it, I'll try to avoid too many spoilers. Basically Bones and Booth had to solve a murder (what else is new) and they were successful (seriously, I'm ruining nothing). What was interesting though was that they appeared in very little of the show. Why? Well, because Hart Hanson and his crew wanted to introduce us to their new show, which will be premiering on Fox in the not too distant future. The show has, rather obviously, the same name as this episode: "The Finder".

During this week's episode Bones and Booth were in Miami where the remains had been discovered. Apparently, Booth has an old army 'friend' (Walter Sherman) who is a finder. Weird that Booth has never, ever mentioned this guy before, huh? Guess you need plenty of army buddies for a successful spin-off series. He can, quite literally, located anything that anyone has ever lost. He was also brain-damaged in the war which causes rampant paranoia.

Now, the premise of "The Finder" isn't all bad. Although I do have to admit that it's a bit too much like "The Mentalist" for my liking. Still, Hart Hanson seems to be skilled at making things appealing quirky, so maybe it will be a smash hit. When reviewing this week's "Bones" episode that's kind of beside the point. My biggest problem with the episode? It wasn't "Bones"! So much of it was focused on introducing Walter and his friends (who I assume will be the primary cast of "The Finder") that the tone of the episode was completely wrong. I felt as though I was watching a brand new show that just happened to have a tiny side-story which featured the crew of the Jeffersonian. It felt bizarre to say the least. I do have to admit that I'm often thrown by shows introducing their own spin-offs (I didn't like it much when "NCIS" featured the new cast of "NCIS: LA" much either), still I felt that "Bones" did a particularly poor job.

We only saw Booth and Brennan briefly (which was just enough time for Brennan to appear more socially inept and vapid seriously this used to be an intelligent woman, why are the writers doing this? and for Booth to interact with her in a way that was somehow less charming than it used to be.) In fact, it seemed as though they were only there at the beginning and the end, sandwiched around the real story which focused on Walter and his cronies. And which was, essentially, the premiere episode of "The Finder". I understand that "The Finder" is a new show aimed at the same audience as "Bones", but when I sit down in excitement to watch the weekly episode of "Bones" I prefer not to be tricked into watching something else entirely.

And it seems like some other people agree with me, this week "Bones" dropped 9% from last week's viewers...

"Bones" vs. "Grey's"...all new episodes & sweeps

So, "Bones" is an all new episode tonight (the first of 7 new episodes!) and I couldn't be happier. In fact, I'm super relieved that I don't have to pick between "Bones" and "Grey's" (which is a rerun tonight). I've really liked the last couple of weeks where they've been alternating new episodes. It has almost lulled me into a 'awww, how sweet, Fox and ABC are taking turns' sense of calm. But, it's almost time for May sweeps, so pretty soon everyone's going to fight to the death cancellation.

I miss the good old days (of last season) when "Bones" was on at 8 and "Grey's" was on at 9. It was sooo perfect. "Grey's" had finally won me back (I originally quit watching around the 3rd season when Meredith was in her whiny look-at-me-suicide-who cares phase). And despite the disappointment of the musical episode I do care enough about Arizona, Callie, Mark, Lexi, and that baby that I'm willing to keep watching.


But just because I'm going to be watching "Grey's" doesn't mean I'll be watching it live. In fact, I'm really torn about which of the two shows I'll be tuning in during sweeps. I'm going to be watching the next two episodes of "Bones" (both new, while "Grey's" is still reruns) to see if there are hints of a Bones/Booth romance (and I mean a real one, not this game we've been playing for the last 3 years).
If Bones and Booth get together in any sense of the word, no way am I finding out about it online after the fact.

This happened once, will it happen again?

But then again, I don't want to miss the drama of Callie and Arizona's wedding either. And, lets be honest, "Grey's" is a little better at keeping it's promises than "Bones". At least Meredith and Derek ended up together, even if it took forever!

All I can say is, thank god "Bones" and "Grey's" aren't going to be competing again until they both have new episodes on April 28th. At least I'll have Hulu. Although I still think there's something special about the anticipation of watching a show when it first airs on television.

And not that it is in any sense a cancellation issue ("Bones" and "Grey's" are both way too successful), when April 28th comes I don't know what decision I'm going to make, do you?
